Spider Veins Treatment

It is often assumed that Spider veins are synonymous with varicose veins. However, there is a difference between the two. Spider veins are red, blue, and purple. They appear mostly on the face, calf, thighs, ankle, and in very few cases on the chest and neck. They begin as tiny capillaries and appear as blue or red squiggles and sometimes even as starburst clusters or spider webs.

Spider veins are capillaries or thin blood vessels directly connected to the larger venous system. Like varicose veins, spider veins are also caused due to venous reflux. In addition, spider veins may be associated with large “feeder” underlying varicose veins or may be isolated. Spider veins cannot be felt but merely seen on the skin’s surface.

They generally appear in these patterns:

  • In spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a central point
  • A linear pattern can be seen as thin separate lines.
  • Chronic itching around one or more of the veins in your legs
  • In the shape of branches of a tree.

Women are more likely to get affected by spider veins than men, and pregnancy is the key reason. However, it causes only cosmetic problems in most cases.

Symptoms of Spider Veins

If unattended, spider veins may also have large underlying varicose veins.

Cause of Spider Veins

Spider veins can occur when the valves of the veins stop working properly. Veins carry blood back to the heart. To prevent blood from flowing backwards, veins have a one-way valve.

If this valve weakens, the blood struggles to flow in the right direction, and it can begin to fill inside the vein. Over time, this causes a bulge in the vein that branches out, resulting in spider veins.

Spider Veins on Nose?

Spider veins on or around the nose are rare due to blood pooling under the skin. Gravitational force, obesity and extreme pressure from body weight in obese people, and exposure to the sun or traumatic experience are other reasons for spider veins on or around the nose.

Women are more likely to get affected by spider veins than men due to genetic differences. And this often becomes cosmetic trouble for them. However, spider veins on or around the nose are not fatal to health. These veins are tiny and reddish or bluish and look like faint branches.

The major problem of spider veins on the nose is that people become self-conscious and lose confidence in their presence. Spider veins, in rare cases, take place due to a disorder known as rosacea, and the major contributing factors for rosacea are prolonged exposure to the sun or bruising.

Due to genetic predispositions, continuous sneezing or coughing results in often enlarged veins around the nose and nostrils. The treatment method depends on the condition of the veins, which can be different for individuals due to age, diet, alcohol intake, and hormonal changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Spider veins are named because they often form in small irregular clusters that appear like a network of spider webs.

Since veins contain deoxygenated blood, spider veins are usually purple, dark red, or blue.

Spider veins develop when blood pools up because it isn’t flowing in the right direction. Therefore, it can be considered that circulatory problem causes spider veins. This is true for some cases, but these tiny vein abnormalities are often treated like a skin condition rather than a circulatory problem.
